Seven Labs Technology Congratulates Jean Smith on His Promotion to Chief Technology Officer.
Seven Labs Technology is proud to announce the promotion of Jean Smith to Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Jean’s journey from a passionate young engineer to a seasoned technical leader has been marked by dedication, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
From a young age, Jean was captivated by electronics. “I decided I wanted to become an electronic engineer when I was seven years old,” he recalls. That early curiosity blossomed into a formal education at the University of Pretoria, where he developed a deep appreciation for solving complex problems and enjoyed the rich exchange of knowledge with his peers.
Jean’s progression from Engineer to Technical Manager and now to CTO is a testament to his breadth of experience. “The most rewarding part of the journey has been the experience I gained along the way,” he explains. “Working at Seven Labs, where we not only design but also sell components and offer kitting services, taught me how to align designs with what’s commercially viable in the market.”
He attributes much of his preparedness for this leadership role to the wide range of technical challenges he’s tackled over the years. “Experience is something you cannot study for—it’s gained by actively engaging in projects and solving real-world issues,” he says.Jean also has valuable advice for young engineers aspiring to grow into leadership roles: “Work hard and don’t get discouraged when things don’t work out at first. Persistence always pays off.”
Looking to the future, Jean is enthusiastic about emerging technologies—especially in energy storage and solar innovations. His passion for electronics and programming continues to fuel his motivation as a leader in the tech space.
Outside of work, Jean finds balance through music. “When I get the time, I enjoy listening to all sorts of music, and I occasionally like to play the musical keyboard,” he shares.
